Unresolved Fate
Beginning of the End
Emma's POV
Something was wrong with Erik.
Emma noticed it the moment he walked through the door. And it was not because he said anything or he looked angry or that he didn't kiss her.
For six years, Erik had always kissed her first when he came back.
Even after brutal training sessions or missions that left blood on his clothes and exhaustion in his eyes. No matter how tired he was, he would pull her into his arms like coming home to her was the only thing keeping him standing.
Tonight, he barely looked at her.
A cold knot twisted in her stomach but she ignored it.
"Dinner's almost ready," she said carefully, forcing brightness into her voice.
"Smells good," he answered absentmindedly.
That was all.
There was no teasing grin or hand sliding around her waist. There was no stolen kiss while she cooked.
Everywhere was just silent.
Emma swallowed hard and turned back toward the stove before he could notice the flicker of hurt across her face.
Today was supposed to be special.
They were celebrating six years together.
They had dated for three years before they'd stood before the Moon Goddess and chosen each other as mates.
Chosen, not fated. Some believed chosen bonds were weaker than destiny-marked ones, but Emma had never cared about that.
She loved Erik. And he loved her.
At least… she thought he did.
Sometimes a fated bond forms during the mating ceremony. The elders called it a blessing from the Moon Goddess herself. For Emma and Erik, it never happened. There was no soul-deep tether or pull.
But they had built something stronger… or so she believed.
It was a life with dreams and a beautiful future.
Tonight she had wanted to celebrate all of it. She had spent hours in the kitchen preparing one of Erik's favorite meals. Fresh herbs from her garden filled the air with rich earthy scents. Vegetables simmered gently in sauce while handmade pasta cooked perfectly in boiling water.
She had even used her mother's recipe.
The table looked beautiful when she finished. Candles flickered softly between them, golden light dancing across the extra clean plates. A small vase of flowers sat in the center like something out of a romance novel.
It should have been perfect.
Instead, tension stretched across the room like a rope ready to snap.
Dinner passed with awkward conversation.
Normally, they would laugh over stories from the day or argue playfully about pack gossip. Erik would steal food off her plate just to annoy her. She would kick him under the table while trying not to laugh.
Tonight, every conversation died too quickly.
Emma kept trying to revive it, throwing question after question toward him, but his answers were short.
For the first time in six years, silence between them felt unbearable.
Was it just her imagination?
Maybe she was overthinking things. Maybe he was exhausted from work or she was nervous because she had spent the entire evening debating whether tonight was finally the right moment to ask him about starting a family.
Then Erik reached for her hands.
The second his fingers touched hers, Emma froze.
He was shaking.
His palms were damp with sweat, and his breathing sounded uneven.
Fear crawled up her spine.
Without a word, he guided her toward the sofa. Emma sat beside him slowly, her pulse thundering in her ears.
What was happening?
"My love," Erik said hoarsely, "I have to tell you something."
Emma's stomach dropped.
She watched his Adam's apple bob as he swallowed hard. His jaw clenched tightly, like the words physically hurt him to say.
Whatever this was… it was bad.
Still, she nodded softly, silently encouraging him to continue.
"I want to travel the world," he said carefully. "Advance my warrior skills."
Emma blinked once. That wasn't what she expected. Relief almost came.
Then he added one final word.
"Alone."
The air left her lungs. She stared at him, trying to process what he meant.
Alone?
He traveled often for missions. That part wasn't unusual. Maybe he meant temporarily. A few months away. Maybe…
"You're leaving me?" she whispered. Her own voice barely sounded like she heard it.
"When will you be back?"
There was a long and heavy silence. Erik wouldn't even look at her.
Panic began clawing through her chest.
"Baby," he finally said, his voice breaking slightly, "I'm leaving for good."
The world stopped. Emma felt it physically — the moment her heart cracked apart inside her chest.
"No…" she whispered automatically. This couldn't be real. "Without me?" she asked desperately, as though maybe she had misunderstood.
"Yes."
He said without hesitation or pause.
Emma stared at him in disbelief.
"What about our bond?" she asked shakily. "Our dreams? The family we wanted? Your job… you love being lead warrior. Does the Alpha even know about this?"
Questions fired out of her uncontrollably like arrows from a broken bow.
Erik leaned back against the sofa, exhausted. "I informed the Alpha this morning."
The coldness in his voice terrified her more than shouting ever could.
She had seen Erik ruthless in battle before. Seen him return from combat covered in blood and fury.
But it was never toward her.
"Why?" she demanded. "Why now? Why leave me behind? Why can't I come with you?"
Her voice rose with every question.
Still, he barely answered and he stayed distant.
Emma felt anger beginning to mix with heartbreak.
He owed her an explanation.
Six years together and he was destroying everything with a few sentences.
"You're really doing this?" she asked softly.
"Yes."
He said calmly, steadily and final.
The tears gathering in her eyes blurred her vision. "Today?" Her voice cracked. "Of all days, you chose today to break up with me?"
Erik closed his eyes briefly, pain flashing across his face.
"You're sure?" she whispered.
"Yes."
This time she couldn't look at him anymore. She stared at the floor instead, fighting desperately to keep herself together. Fighting the sob building in her throat.
But then she noticed something. A tear sliding down his cheek.
Emma slowly lifted her gaze.
His eyes were red, swollen and filled with restrained grief. He looked just as shattered as she felt.
Hope flickered painfully inside her chest.
Maybe he didn't mean this or he was scared. Maybe something had happened. Maybe….
Then Erik spoke again.
And this time, the words destroyed her completely.
"I, Erik Lockheart, reject you, Emma Stone, as my chosen mate." His voice trembled despite the formality of the words. "Now accept my rejection."
Emma's breath caught violently in her throat.
No. No no no… This wasn't real.
Was he truly ending their bond? Ending them?
The pain hit her all at once, sharp and unbearable, like someone ripping her heart from her chest with bare hands.
A broken sob escaped her lips, then another and another.
Until she finally shattered completely, crying for the love she had just lost.
